In Ulyanovsk plan to restore the Trinity Cathedral, destroyed almost 90 years ago

In Ulyanovsk again returned to the question of the restoration of the historic Trinity Cathedral. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia supported the initiative to revive the church, destroyed in the 1930s. He gave the corresponding blessing during a meeting with the leadership of the Ulyanovsk region and the Simbirsk Metropolia.

The issue of returning one of the lost Orthodox shrines to the city was discussed on October 15 in Moscow. The meeting took place in the Patriarchal and Synodal Residence on the territory of the Danilov Monastery. It was attended by the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region Alexei Russian and Metropolitan of Simbirsk and Novospassky Longin.

During the conversation, the head of the Simbirsk Metropolia told about the activities of the diocese and the completion of the construction of the Alexander Nevsky temple in Ulyanovsk. A separate topic was the possible restoration of the Trinity Cathedral, which once occupied an important place in the architectural and spiritual appearance of Simbirsk.

Patriarch Kirill supported the intention to restore the historic building. On the documents presented, he left a written blessing dated October 15, 2026. In it, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church expressed support for the metropolitan and regional authorities in implementing the initiative.

The history of the Trinity Cathedral is closely connected with the events of the Patriotic War of 1812. The temple was built in 1841 according to the project of architect Mikhail Korinthsky. Its construction was a sign of gratitude for the victory over Napoleon and a way to perpetuate the memory of the participants of the Simbirsk militia.

The cathedral was used as a summer temple and formed a single architectural complex with the Nikolsky Winter Cathedral. In the underground part of the latter were the burials of four Simbirsk bishops.

In the 1930s, both buildings were destroyed. The burials of church figures were ruined, and the territory of the former temple complex later turned into an urban walking area.

Attempts to return the Trinity Council have been made before. In the early 2000s, a social movement arose in Ulyanovsk to restore it to its former place. In 2005, even adopted a resolution on construction and prepared the pit, but beyond the initial work, the project did not advance.

A new stage of discussion began in September 2024, when the city celebrated the 200th anniversary of the founding of the cathedral. By the memorable date, historical publications and an exhibition dedicated to the temple and the Simbirsk militia were prepared. Representatives of the regional government, city administration, historians, local historians and architects participated in the organization of events.

At the same time, they clarified the location of the destroyed building and installed a memorial cross over the alleged burial place of bishops. Excursions were held on Cathedral Square, an evening of remembrance and a concert with the participation of the State Symphony Orchestra “Governor”.

The continuation of this work was the divine service on September 13, 2026. On the day of the celebration of the Cathedral of the Simbirsk Saints, a church service was held for the first time on the site of the destroyed temple, which gathered about a thousand people.

Now the initiative has received the blessing of Patriarch Kirill. At the same time, specific dates for the start of construction, the cost of work and sources of financing for the future project have not yet been named.
