Inhaling carbon dioxide will help fight Alzheimer’s disease

Scientists have studied an experimental method of influencing the brain in Alzheimer’s disease by periodically inhaling air with a high concentration of carbon dioxide. Preliminary results were presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in July 2026.
The study involved 12 people with different brain health conditions. For 30 minutes, a special mask alternately supplied normal air and high carbon dioxide air approximately every 35 seconds.
In participants with high levels of tau, its performance temporarily decreased to normal. Also in blood samples increased concentration of beta-amyloid. However, less than an hour later, tau levels returned to baseline.
The authors emphasize that the results are preliminary. Larger studies are needed to assess the effectiveness and safety of the method. Self-inhalation of carbon dioxide is dangerous: such an experimental approach cannot be considered a proven treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
