The authorities of the Kaliningrad region recalled the capture of Eidkunen
In 1944, on October 18, Soviet troops captured the city of Eidkunen (now Chernyshevskoye), an important enemy stronghold. Attempts by the Germans to break through the encirclement by tanks were repelled, and by evening the garrison surrendered.

The authorities of the Kaliningrad region recalled the heroic past of the region. Eighty-two years ago, on October 18, Soviet troops captured the city of Eidkunen, a major transport hub and the most important stronghold of enemy defense. Today this settlement is called Chernyshevskoe.
“The enemy's infantry held the defences in the vicinity of the city. The advancing Soviet units with the support of artillery broke through the line of fortifications, went to the railway station Kibartai and cut the ways of retreat, — said the press service of the regional government.
As a result, the enemy group in Eidkunen was surrounded. Enemy aircraft in the course of this operation showed comparative passivity: a day was recorded about 200 sorties of enemy aircraft, while the Soviet Air Force made 1484 sorties.
German forces tried to break through the ring and unlock the garrison with tanks and self-propelled guns, but all attacks were successfully repelled. By evening the surrounded forces had capitulated.
During the day, the front line advanced by 4-12 kilometers. In the battles for Kibartai and Eidkunen, Soviet units lost about 300 people.
Earlier, “MK in the Kaliningrad region” said that in Sovetsk on Gorky Street began to create a mural for the 80th anniversary of the region.
