People's calendar
In the national calendar, October 16 is known as the Day of Denis Pozimnego. The saint received the nickname “Winter” because by this time the peasants felt the approach of winter: the first frosts, cold winds, low lead sky.
In Russia, this day was considered associated with protection from the evil eye and diseases. To protect the house from spoilage, onions and garlic were hung over the windows and doors. It was recommended to wear aspen bark with you - aspen was considered a talisman tree.
There were weather signs. If the day is warm and clear - there will be no frost for another two weeks, and the winter is expected to be mild. If the moon is dark or cloudy, it will rain. If the ticks gather in flocks and shout loudly - to clear and warm weather. If sparrows fussily fly from place to place - to bad weather.
