Volgograd residents will celebrate Orthodox, secular and international holidays on October 24
On October 24, 2026, the Orthodox world will honor the Apostle of 70 Philip and the Monk Theophanes the Confessor, Bishop of Nicaea. In folk tradition, this day was called the Philipp Cantelya. At the international level, it is one of the key days of the year – UN Day.
Orthodox calendar
The Orthodox Church will honor the memory of the Apostle of 70 Philip, one of the first seven elected deacons of the Jerusalem community. He is known for preaching in Samaria and baptizing an Ethiopian nobleman. The apostle was later made bishop in Lydia.
The memory of St. Theophanes the Inscribed, Bishop of Nicea (circa 850) – an outstanding Christian poet and hymnographer, compiler of more than 150 church canons, who suffered torture for venerating holy icons. The Church will remember the martyrs Zinaida and Philonilla (I century) and celebrate the Council of the Elders of Optina.
The Day of the Angel (name day) on October 24 is celebrated: Philip, Theophanes, Leo, Anatoly, Makar, Alexander, Zinaida, Victoria.
