Petrozavodskmash volunteers helped PetrSU Botanical Garden prepare for cold weather
The Botanical Garden of Petrozavodsk State University has become a platform for ecological landing

Recently, the Botanical Garden of Petrozavodsk State University became a platform for ecological landing. Employees of the Petrozavodskmash enterprise together with their relatives came out on Saturday to help garden staff prepare a young alley of field maples for the harsh Karelian winter.
Since the field maple is a heat-loving culture, unusual to the northern climate, its care requires special attention. Volunteers conducted a thorough weeding and covered the trunk circles of trees with a layer of bark (mulching), which will help protect the root system from freezing. In addition, the participants of the action planted a seedling of mountain pine. This long-lived tree, able to grow up to two centuries, will be a kind of “gift” for future generations of garden visitors.
It is worth noting that environmental volunteering at Petrozavodskmash is widely developed: about 180 people participate in the movement, and two dozen activists make up the backbone of the “green team”.
PetrSU Botanical Garden is known for its rich collection. One of its pearls is the red oak. This species got its name due to the bright color of the foliage: in spring, young shoots have a reddish hue, and in autumn the crown acquires a rich brown-brown color. Often, dry leaves remain on the branches even in winter. The homeland of this majestic tree is North America, where it is valued not only for its decorative qualities in park art, but also as a valuable forest-forming species.
