Doctors have tested a new way of resuscitation for cardiac arrest

British doctors have tested an experimental method of resuscitation, which allows to improve blood circulation in patients whose heart cannot be started by traditional methods. To do this, doctors temporarily blocked the aorta with a special balloon, directing blood flow mainly to the heart and brain. The preliminary results were presented at the American Heart Association Symposium in Chicago.
The study involved 39 people who had suffered cardiac arrest outside the hospital. From June 2024 to June 2026, they were assisted by medical aviation specialists in the East of England.
The procedure was performed on 36 patients. 33 of them successfully blocked the aorta. After the intervention, diastolic pressure increased from 26 to 42 mm Hg, and systolic pressure increased from 76 to 91 mm.
At the same time, the carbon dioxide content in the exhaled air increased. This indicator helps to assess the effectiveness of blood circulation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
In eight of the 33 patients, stable independent blood circulation was restored after successful use of the method. Two people were subsequently discharged from hospital with a favorable nervous system condition. Serious complications directly related to the procedure, the researchers did not identify.
However, it is premature to talk about a proven increase in survival. The test was conducted without a control group and was aimed primarily at assessing the technical feasibility of the procedure.
