The lawyer explained what to do when finding a corpse

When detecting a human body, it is important to act strictly according to the law, not succumbing to panic and the urge to fix something. About this in the comment “Gazeta.Ru” told the lawyer Vyacheslav Pechnikov.

The first thing to do, he said, is to call an ambulance: even if a person appears dead, a condition in which vital signs are barely perceptible cannot be ruled out. While doctors are traveling, it is forbidden to touch the body, move it or touch objects nearby - every detail, from prints to traces on the ground, can be critical for law enforcement.

“Once the medical team assesses the situation, the find should be reported to the police immediately. Before the arrival of law enforcement officers, it is better to stay in place: this will not only help to promptly provide the necessary information, but also eliminate possible questions about a hasty departure, the lawyer explained.

According to Pechnikov, the arriving employees need to calmly and in as much detail as possible to tell how and under what circumstances the body was found, without adding speculation and without trying to independently interpret the causes of death. The facts have value for the investigation, not the versions.

The expert stressed that the risk of a casual eyewitness falling under suspicion is minimal if he did not hide evidence, did not move the body and did not destroy traces. Modern forensics is able to accurately establish the time and cause of death, so honest and timely informing services only removes unnecessary questions.

If the investigator is called later, this is standard procedure. If there are doubts in the wording, it is worth remembering the right not to testify against yourself, enshrined in Article 51 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, and if necessary, contact a lawyer, Pechnikov concluded.
