Over 25 years, the population of the Kostroma region decreased by 200 thousand people

Since the beginning of the XXI century in the Kostroma region has become 200 thousand inhabitants less. Such data leads Kostromastat, the report of which refers to the publication “KOSTROMA.TUDEY”.

In 2000, more than 760,000 people lived in the region. By early 2025, the population had dropped to about 560,000. Especially noticeable changes have occurred in rural areas: the number of its inhabitants has decreased by almost half during this period.

The population decline has continued throughout the past decades. In the period from 2000 to 2010, the region lost about 90,000 inhabitants, from 2010 to 2020 - another 75,000. For five years, from 2020 to 2025, the reduction amounted to about 40 thousand people.
