Every year on October 26, believers remember four early Christian martyrs.
The Martyrs Carp, Papila, Agathodorus and Agathonique suffered for their faith during the time of Emperor Decius in the third century. The first two saints were from Pergamon and from their youth led a pious, ascetic life, both professed Christianity.
The saints were subjected to humiliating torture, tied to horses and dragged along a rocky road from Fiatira to Sardis. Following the martyrs, their servant and disciple Agathodorus and Agathonicus, the sister of Papila, who shared the faith and steadfastness of her brother, volunteered.
In Sardis, Agafodor was beaten to death, and Carp, Papila and Agathonique continued to be tortured, demanding a renouncement of Christianity, but all three remained adamant and were eventually executed.
