Residents of Michurinsk sound the alarm because of the deplorable state of the Sorbyashchensky cemetery, located next to the church in the name of the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”. This is the oldest preserved necropolis of the city, having the status of a historical monument.
As citizens note, today the territory of the cemetery is heavily neglected: the graves and paths are overgrown with grass and trees, and broken branches and fallen trunks destroy old tombstones. According to local residents, the last time comprehensive improvement was carried out here in 2017. Relatives care for individual burials, but the situation cannot be corrected by common forces. Despite appeals to the administration, the situation does not change.
Of particular value to the necropolis give burial of outstanding personalities. Here rest the participants of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Great Patriotic War, relatives and friends of composer Sergei Rachmaninov, scientist-selector Ivan Michurin and other famous people.
The Popular Front intervened in the situation: social activists sent an official appeal to the administration of Michurinsk with a request to plan work on the improvement of the cemetery. The necropolis must be preserved as a historical memory for future generations.
