To the World Breast Cancer Day, the chief freelance oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Zaporozhye region Elena Chirva spoke about the importance of early diagnosis of the disease.
According to the specialist, the main danger of breast cancer is in its asymptomatic course: a woman often feels healthy until the disease reaches a late stage. That is why regular examinations are critically important: women under 40 years old are recommended ultrasound, after 40 - mammography every two years, as well as monthly or quarterly self-examination.
In the high-risk group - women with a hereditary predisposition, as well as older women; an additional reason for control - taking hormonal contraceptives.
When benign formations are detected, the patient is taken under observation, large cysts are removed in a minimally invasive way. If cancer is diagnosed, modern methods - from organ-preserving operations to chemotherapy and hormone therapy - allow you to achieve recovery, especially with timely treatment.
The oncologist stressed that today breast cancer is not a sentence – the main enemy remains inaction. All necessary examinations and treatment are available to residents of the region free of charge under the territorial program of state guarantees.
