Infantino's opponents are still hoping that before the deadline of November 18, the head of FIFA will have a serious rival. They hope that they will be able to persuade the 76-year-old Wenger, who enjoys worldwide respect, to run.
Wenger is the most successful coach in Arsenal history (1996–2018). Under his leadership, the team won the Premier League three times and won the FA Cup seven times. Since 2019, Wenger has been head of FIFA’s global football development department.
The FIFA presidential election will take place in March 2027. Infantino took over from FIFA in 2016 and plans to run for a new term. Also, the desire to run was expressed by the former defender of Tottenham and the Swiss national team Ramon Vega. UEFA also talked about plans to find an alternative candidate together with partner confederations.
Earlier, several European federations withdrew their support for Infantino in the upcoming elections. The reason was the plans of FIFA to sell part of the commercial rights to the World Cup to external investors, which the organization had to give up amid the scandal. Infantino later apologized for the mistakes.
