Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin said he decided to retire from the National Hockey League (NHL) after the end of the season due to health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family. His words are quoted on the club's website.
41-year-old Ovechkin October 5 announced that the season 2026/27 will be his last in the NHL.
“My wife and I talked about it. I have to listen to my body. I'm not 20 anymore. I want to play with my kids as they grow up. Play hockey, football, basketball with them. And I want to be healthy enough to do it all, Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin has played for Washington since 2005. He is the winner of the 2018 Stanley Cup, the best sniper in the history of the regular championships of the NHL (929 goals) and the champion of the league in many respects.
In July, Ovechkin signed a new one-year contract with Washington. This season, he can beat Wayne Gretzky's record for the total number of goals in the NHL (including the playoffs) - 1016. Now on account of the Russian 1006 goals.
