Messi also paid tribute to Diego Maradona: "I don't want to forget Diego, who brought our country where it deserved to be, and who, as I always say, helped us, being here with us, as well as from heaven, at every step we take.".
Messi, 39, played his last match for Argentina against Benin (3-0) at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. In the 71st minute, he realized a penalty and scored two assists.
Messi has played for the national team since 2005, playing 208 games and scoring 126 goals. During this time, he won the 2022 World Cup and won the Copa America twice (2021, 2024).
