Sons of Alexander Ovechkin went on the ice and announced the release of his father before the first home match of the season forward. The rival of the Washington Capitals was the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Ovechkin stepped onto the ice at the end of the team presentation ceremony.
Sergei (now 8 years old) and Ilya (6 years old) Ovechkin, wearing sweaters of the team with the eighth number of his father, took the microphone and announced: "Your captain, number eight, Alexander Ooovechkin." After that, Ovechkin hugged his sons and joined the team to the standing ovation of the stands.
Ovechkin himself later called the moment special and said one of his sons was nervous before leaving. "It was very cool," the captain added.
The Washington Capitals eventually defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3. However, the 41-year-old Ovechkin himself was not marked by effective actions, extending his goalless streak in the season to three matches.
Before the start of the current season, the Russian announced that he would be his last in the NHL.
