Trump in conversation with Putin noted the merits of Ovechkin in world hockey
Sport has become one of the topics of conversation between the leaders of Russia and the United States, said Vladimir Putin’s assistant Yuri Ushakov.

US President Donald Trump in a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the merits of the captain of the NHL club “Washington Capitals” Alexander Ovechkin in world sports. This was reported by the assistant to the Russian leader Yuri Ushakov.
According to Ushakov, sports became one of the topics of the conversation between Putin and Trump, which took place on October 9.
“It is worth noting such a detail of the conversation, when the American president, talking about sports, recognized the merits of Alexander Ovechkin before world hockey,” Ushakov said.
Trump is not the first time to celebrate the merits of Ovechkin. In January 2025, the US President, speaking at the home arena of “Washington” as part of the Make America Great Again Victory Rally, noted the success of the NHL club and called the Russian a great player.
41-year-old Ovechkin is the NHL record holder for goals in the regular championships (929). It surpassed Canadian Wayne Gretzky (894) in the spring of 2025.
In early July, he extended his contract with Washington for another season. The Russian forward remained ten goals before the repetition of Gretzky's record for goals in the NHL, taking into account the playoffs (1016). This season will be the last for the captain of Washington in the NHL.
