The goalkeeper of Paris-Saint Germain and the Russian national team Matvey Safonov did not win the prize for the best goalkeeper of 2026 according to France Football. The ceremony was held for the first time in London at the Palladium Theatre.
The best goalkeeper in the world was recognized as the goalkeeper of the club “Athletic Bilbao” and the national team of Spain Unai Simon.
Safonov for the first time in the history of domestic football was nominated for the prize of the best goalkeeper.
Last season was very successful for Safonov and his PSG. The team won the Champions League, the French Championship, the Intercontinental Cup, the French Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
The goalkeeper also set a record, reflecting four consecutive penalties in the Intercontinental Cup final series against Flamengo. For 27 matches, he missed 28 goals and defended 12 times by zero.
The official title of the best goalkeeper award has been changed to Goalkeeper of the Year. The name Yashin Trophy is no longer used in official publications and nomination lists.
