The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has launched a disciplinary investigation “in connection with possible irregularities on the part of a player (or players)” of the Israeli national team during the Nations League match with the team of Ireland. This is reported by The Guardian.
On October 4, the teams played a match on a neutral field in the Serbian town of Bačka Topol. The meeting ended with the score 0: 0. Irish fitness coach Damien Doyle said one of the opponents' players spat at him as the teams headed to the locker rooms after the first half. The representative of the Israeli Football Association denied these reports, while the head coach of the Irish national team Heimir Hadlgrimsson noted that his wards were subjected to a number of provocations.
At the previous meeting, held on September 27 in Debrecen, Hungary, the players of the Irish national team came out with mourning armbands in memory of those killed in the conflict in the Gaza Strip. They listened to the hymn of Israel, bowing their heads. There was also no handshake between the players.
