Russian clubs were suspended from participation in the Euroleague during the 2021/22 season after the start of a special operation in Ukraine. Since then, sanctions have been extended several times.
“We must first return CSKA. Real, Panathinaikos, CSKA are European basketball. Without these clubs, it is impossible to determine a true champion, Yiannakopoulos wrote.
CSKA has won the Euroleague four times this century: in 2006, 2008, 2016 and 2019. The Moscow club won four more titles of the most prestigious continental competition in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was held under the auspices of the International Basketball Federation.
On October 6, the Euroleague summit was held in the Italian city of Chornobbio, where a plan was approved to expand the number of teams to 24 (now there are 20). The clubs unanimously rejected the National Basketball Association's (NBA) proposal to merge with the new Continental League.
