One of the best Russian goalkeepers of the NHL received a serious injury

The next meeting of the regular championship of the National Hockey League ended for the New York Rangers with an unfavorable outcome. The away game against the Washington Capitals, which ended with a score of 1: 3, brought the team not only defeat, despite leading in the score under Mike Sullivan, but also the loss of the main goalkeeper.

Russian goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin, recently marked the first goal in his career in the NHL and showed high performance, was damaged in the second period of the meeting and was replaced by Dylan Garanda. In this game episode, the goalkeeper promptly left the goal area, trying to block the corner for the throw. However, the attacker of the opponent team managed to process the puck and change the direction of attack. The goalkeeper tried to quickly return to the starting position and move to the far bar, but his movement was too sharp.

Probably, if the design of the gate was affected, damage could be avoided. Instead, the blade of the player's skate caught on the barbell, after which he lost his balance and fell on his leg. Already at the moment when the Russian athlete left the ice field with outside help, it became clear that the nature of the injury is serious. The next day, the press service of the American club officially confirmed that this season the goalkeeper will not be on the ice again. The exact diagnosis has not yet been disclosed, but experts suggest rupture of the cruciate ligaments.

Sports medicine specialist Jesse Morse, who analyzed video footage of the incident, identified two of the most likely injuries of concern. According to him, it can be a fracture of the right ankle, provoked by hard contact with a fixed bar, or a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee. The doctor stressed that these conclusions are based solely on visual analysis and are not a final medical conclusion.

Currently, the name of Shesterkin will be included in the injured players list. This procedure will allow the club to exclude the terms of his contract from the salary ceiling until the end of the current season.
