Opponents of the current president of the International football Federation (FIFA) Gianni Infantino are trying to convince the former head coach of London “Arsenal” Arsene Wenger to put forward his candidacy in the upcoming elections of the head of the organization. It is reported by the newspaper The Times.
Elections will be held in Morocco in March 2027. According to the established rules, potential candidates can submit their applications until November 18.
Wenger currently serves as FIFA’s head of global football development. The head of the Confederation of Football of North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) Victor Montagliani, who was previously considered one of the likely candidates for the presidency of FIFA, does not intend to nominate his candidacy.
Gianni Infantino, 56, was elected head of FIFA at an extraordinary congress in February 2016. He was re-elected twice on an uncontested basis.
Arsene Wenger is 76. He led Arsenal from 1996 to 2018. Under his leadership, the team from London became the champion of England three times, won the FA Cup and Super Cup seven times, and also reached the finals of the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. As head coach, Wenger also worked for Japan’s Nagoya, as well as for French clubs Nancy and Monaco, which he led to winning the championship and the French Cup.
