Seasonal tire fitting. When to change rubber for winter in Belarus in 2026
When to change shoes in Belarus in 2026? Don't wait for December 1st! We explain the official traffic rules for winter tires, marking and tread. Find out why you should go to the tires at +7 ° C, what fines are threatened by violators and how to choose between “Eurozyma”, “Velcro” and spikes.

Every year, with the arrival of autumn cold weather, Belarusian drivers face the inevitable task of preparing a car for the winter period. Clutch of wheels with the road surface in conditions of ice or slush directly determines the safety of all participants in the movement.
We understand the current requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Belarus for 2026, find out the real terms of changing rubber and help determine the choice of the ideal set of tires.
What the SDA dictates: official time frames and fines
In Belarus, the rules of seasonal change of tires are strictly prescribed in the Rules of the road:
- 1.Critical period. The car must be on the winter run on strictly defined dates - from December 1 to March 1.
- 2.Correct marking. The presence on the tire of the standard inscription "All seasons" without graphic symbols will not save from the claims of the traffic police. Inspectors recognize the wheels as winter only if there are signs “M+S”, “M&S”, “M.S”, “M S” or a drawing of a three-peak mountain peak with a snowflake inside.
- 3.The depth of the drawing. Riding on bald rubber is prohibited: the residual height of the tread must be at least 4 mm absolutely on all four wheels of the vehicle.
- 4.Punishment in ruble. For ignoring these rules (departure after December 1 on summer or worn-out winter tires), administrative liability is provided. If the driver is caught again within a year, the punishment will be noticeably stricter.
Actual deadlines: Golden rule of +7°C
Waiting for the calendar winter and going to the workshop only by December 1 is an extremely risky undertaking. The composition of the summer tire begins to quickly tan and lose its properties as soon as the average daily thermometer drops below +7 ° C.
- 1.When to go to the tyres? The ideal window for Belarusians is the end of October or the first half of November, when regular morning frosts come.
- 2.Why change shoes earlier? This will save you from the grueling queues and the traditional jump in station prices on the so-called “tinman’s day” (the first heavy snowfall). In addition, you will be insured against sudden ice on overpasses, bridges and overpasses in the morning.
Choose the type of winter tires for your tasks
The Belarusian climate is unpredictable: for a couple of months, rains and thaw can be replaced several times by severe frosts and blizzards. Focus on where you move most often:
European type ("Eurowinter")
Appointment: Optimal for Minsk and major regional centers, where roads are regularly cleared of snow drifts and sprinkled with salt.
• Pros: Perfectly behave on the wet roadway, perfectly remove water and melted snow, keep silence in the cabin on the track.
Cons: Helpless in front of deep snowdrifts and on open ice.
Scandinavian type (“Velcros”)
Appointment: Ideal for residents of the private sector, suburbs and those who often ply uncleared regional highways.
• Pros: Due to the particularly soft composition of rubber wheels firmly cling to the icy road and rolled snow even in extreme minus. Aggressive deep treads well cleans from snowdrifts.
Cons: On dry and relatively warm urban asphalt, rubber is subject to accelerated wear and can appear rolling in sharp maneuvers.
Studded tires
• Purpose: Full control on icy country roads and clean ice.
• Pros: Provide the shortest braking distance on the ice crust.
Cons: Since spikes are in contact with asphalt most of the time in Belarusian cities, they will make a lot of noise, increase fuel consumption and eventually fly out. It is worth considering that studded rubber is prohibited to enter many countries of Europe.
Checklist for the car owner before the start of the season
- 1.Watch the age of the tires. Even if tread depth looks perfect due to occasional trips, rubber ages and dries over time. The period of safe operation of the winter kit is no more than 5-6 years, after which the composition completely loses its elasticity.
- 2.Remember proper storage. Summer kit should winter in a dry and cool room. Tires without discs are stored exclusively vertically (they need to be turned over periodically), and the wheels assembled are laid in a horizontal stack or suspended.
- 3.Balancing is the law. Before installing the wheels on the car (even if you have a assembled second set on the discs), be sure to visit the balancing machine. This will protect the suspension elements from premature wear and eliminate the unpleasant beating of the steering wheel at speed.
Timely replacement of tires is the key to predictable behavior of the car on the road and your personal peace of mind in the winter season.
