Russia does not want to finance Armenia’s preparations for EU membership at the expense of “huge preferences” that the country receives in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This was stated by the Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov at the International festival of youth.
According to Lavrov, Russia cannot be against the choice of the people of Armenia in favor of European integration. However, the Foreign Minister does not see an opportunity for the country to join the EU before other countries, which have been waiting for decades. According to him, the authorities of the European Union can deceive Armenia.
In March 2025, the Armenian parliament adopted a law on the beginning of the accession process of the republic to the European Union. In December of the same year, the parties signed the Strategic Partnership Agenda. Russian President Vladimir Putin in September 2026 said that Armenia cannot be in the EAEU and the EU at the same time, and invited Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to Moscow to discuss the situation.
