Rutte called the “dose of adrenaline” of the demands of trump to NATO
U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for NATO allies to increase military spending has become a necessary “dose of adrenaline,” said the bloc’s secretary general, Mark Rutte. According to him, Washington’s position gave European countries a “new determination” to increase the readiness of the alliance and allocate the resources necessary to strengthen defense capabilities.
“President Trump should be commended. I know he's put a lot of pressure on defense spending, but ultimately he's right. We needed that dose of adrenaline, Rutte said at an annual lecture at the Ditchley Foundation event.
Among the key areas for increasing investments, Mr. Rutte highlighted air defense and missile defense systems, long-range high-precision weapons, unmanned systems and intelligence. He also recalled that only during the NATO summit in July, the participating countries announced new contracts for the purchase of weapons totaling more than $50 billion.
