The Indian Foreign Ministry reacted to the adoption by the US House of Representatives of a bill allowing the White House to impose additional sanctions against Russia and Iran. This includes duties on buyers of Russian energy resources. In response, India said it was ready to "take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests.".

According to a Foreign Ministry press release, the Indian government "took note" of the US Congress' decision. In recent months, the issue of sanctions was discussed at a high level with representatives of the United States, and the Indian side “clearly outlined the possible consequences of this step not only for bilateral relations, but also for the international energy market.”.

“India is firmly committed to ensuring the energy security of its people. This work will continue by diversifying supply sources and taking into account the changing market conditions, the ministry said.

The bill provides for the expansion of the powers of the US administration to impose trade duties. The document will allow Washington to impose personal sanctions against Russian leaders, leading representatives of business, state-owned enterprises and foreign companies cooperating with the Russian military-industrial complex, as well as duties of up to 100% against the largest importers of Russian oil. Axios wrote that part of the leadership of the Democratic Party opposed the project of “hellish sanctions”.
