Romanian President Nicoshor Dan has nominated the candidacy of European Parliament deputy Siegfried Muresan for the post of Prime Minister of the country, Agerpres reports. It must now be approved by the Romanian parliament. Since May, due to the political crisis in the country could not form a government.
The decision was made after many hours of consultations with leaders and representatives of political parties represented in parliament. President Dan said he was nominating Siegfried Mureshan in the absence of a clear majority. He also stressed that national interests require politicians to make compromises.
“I spoke to Mr. Mureshan and he asked me to give him time to think. “Mr. Mureshan remains my first option, and I am waiting for him to confirm or reject this proposal before issuing the executive order,” he said. Siegfried Mureshan almost immediately confirmed that he accepted the offer. The corresponding message he published on Facebook (belongs to Meta, which is recognized in Russia as extremist and banned).
Siegfried Muresan is the vice chairman of the center-right National Liberal Party (NLP) in Romania. In the European Parliament, he also holds the post of deputy head of the EU’s largest European People’s Party (EPP). His candidacy for the post of Prime Minister in the summer of 2026 against the backdrop of a political crisis was put forward by a coalition of three pro-European parties. In addition to his own party, Mr. Muresan was supported by the Union for the Salvation of Romania and the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania.
In early May, the Romanian parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. He was accused of tight budget policies and poor coordination among coalition partners. On June 4, Nikushor Dan nominated Yevgeny Tomak, his adviser and head of the Popular Movement party, as prime minister, but he was unable to win the support of the parliament. It was not possible to form a government and the second candidate – member of NLP Adrian Vesti.
