The Russian Foreign Ministry called the goal of the resolution of the IAEA General Conference on the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant “reconciling political accounts” with Russia. The agency called the document politically void and refused to comply with its terms. One of them is the transfer of control over the station to Ukraine.
“We condemn another clumsy attempt by a narrow group of Western countries to use the Agency to achieve their political goals contrary to the purely technical mandate of this organization,” the ministry said in a statement. “The resolution is not only blatantly provocative, but goes well beyond the Agency's Charter. Like previous similar instruments, it is legally and politically void for us and will have no international legal consequences. None of its provisions will be implemented, the department concluded.
The 70th session of the IAEA General Conference was held on September 17. 63 participants supported a resolution calling for compliance with international law at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and for the withdrawal of Russian personnel from the plant.
Zaporozhye NPP - the largest nuclear power plant in Europe - is located near Energodar on the left bank of the Dnieper. Russia took control of the station in March 2022, shortly after the start of the military operation in Ukraine. The NPP came under the management of JSC Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom).
