In the third round of secret preliminary voting for the candidate for the post of head of the UN is led by Rebecca Greenspan, former Vice President of Costa Rica. This was reported by Reuters, citing diplomats and sources close to the voting procedure.

According to sources, Ms. Greenspan leads by a small margin. She was the leader in the first round of voting, which took place in July. In the second round, in August, she was ahead of Carolyn Rodriguez-Birquette, Guyana's ambassador to the UN.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is stepping down at the end of 2026. He served two consecutive five-year terms. There are eight candidates in his place. Preliminary votes are held by the 15 members of the UN Security Council in order to reach a consensus and select one final candidate. The number of such votes is not regulated. In 2016, when Antonio Guterres was elected, there were six votes.
