The United States, Denmark and Greenland plan to sign an agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region next week, the office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said.
As indicated in the publication, the document will be signed at the session of the UN General Assembly. The agreement must then be approved in the parliaments of each of the three countries.
The Danish Prime Minister’s Office said the agreement is beneficial for NATO and Europe, and recognizes Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the conclusion of an agreement under which the rights to ensure the security of Greenland pass to the United States. He added that the United States would immediately begin to build up its military presence on the island.
