The United States in the spring of 2026 almost conducted an operation to intercept a Chinese vessel due to an artificial intelligence (AI) error, CNN writes, citing sources. The AI-generated analytical report alleged that the vessel was carrying components of Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
According to the channel, American servicemen were preparing to board the ship. Several military aircraft were taken into the air.
Before the operation began, American officials decided to double-check the data from the report and found that it was created using AI. The chatbot misidentified the cargo the ship was carrying. What exactly was on board is unknown.
The chatbot allegedly combined information from open sources with secret electronic intelligence data stored in government archives, and then provided an unreliable report. One source said the report was "completely false" and "nearly provoked war.".
