Transnistria is ready to hold a new referendum on self-determination. However, it must be accepted by all international actors. This was stated by the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) Vadim Krasnoselsky. The video was published by the presidential press service.

Mr. Krasnoselsky recalled that in 2006 a referendum on self-determination was held in Transnistria. Then 97.1% of citizens supported “the policy of independence of the PMR and subsequent free accession to the Russian Federation”.

20 years ago, Moldova led the people of Transnistria to this choice, as it does now. And the Transnistrian people also have the right to choose. We are ready to hold a referendum in 20 years. No problem. The main thing is that the results of the referendum are accepted by all international participants. Then there are no questions, the president said.

On August 26, 2026, the Moldovan authorities approved a new procedure for taxation of Pridnestrovian imports, which provides for the gradual abolition of tax benefits. From 1 September, companies from Transnistria must pay Moldovan VAT and, where applicable, excise duty on the import of ten groups of goods. The standard VAT rate will be 20%.
