The sanctions include a ban on most financial transactions with the ICC. According to documents obtained by the WSJ, an exception will be made for transactions related to communication services. The sanctions would bar the ICC from conducting transactions in U.S. dollars, leaving the court cut off from much of the global financial system and paralyzed.
In July, the United States announced the launch of a campaign “to eliminate a threat to US sovereignty” by the ICC. The reason was the investigation of the authorities against American servicemen and officials. In August, the United States imposed sanctions on court president Tomoko Akane and senior prosecutor Abdulai Saye. On September 10, Politico, citing sources, reported on the US call for NATO allies to withdraw from the ICC.
