U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Deputy Prime Minister He Lifeng in New York completed negotiations on trade relations. The American side has invited the leaders of the countries Donald trump and Xi Jinping to consider at the summit this week a new mechanism of notification in situations of threats from artificial intelligence (AI), reports Reuters.
“We believe that, as with any cross-border activity, the transition from opacity to greater transparency between the world’s leading AI powers is very important,” he said. Earlier, in May in Beijing, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping discussed the possibility of consulting on the development of AI.
China’s response to the U.S. proposal remains unclear. Vice Premier He Lifeng and China’s chief trade negotiator Li Chenggan left talks at JPMorgan Chase headquarters in New York without speaking to the media.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the meeting also discussed potential reductions in tariffs on non-strategic goods. We need to create a relatively small subgroup of American and Chinese goods whose trade can be balanced, which are not sensitive.
Mr. Greer and Mr. Bessent did not mention any progress in overcoming restrictions on the supply of critical minerals to U.S. companies. They also did not provide new information on other outstanding issues at the May meeting of heads of state, including promises by China to increase purchases of agricultural products in the United States by $ 17 billion a year and purchase more than 200 Boeing aircraft.
