Former presidential candidate Kalin Georgescu has been detained in Romania. He is charged with organizing a criminal group and committing fraudulent acts. The operation was carried out by the Organized Crime and Terrorism Administration (DIICOT) together with the police.

According to the statement of security forces, on September 21 in Bucharest and the suburbs of Mogoshoi, Cholpan and Bufta were searched. In addition to Calin Giorgescu, law enforcement authorities detained two more people: a Romanian citizen and an Italian citizen. Their names were not disclosed.

According to local media, in the case of Mr. Georgescu, the amount of damage from the alleged fraudulent operations is about 1.1 million euros. Details of the criminal scheme are unknown.

Calin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential election on November 24, 2024, but the Constitutional Court later annulled the results. The reason was declassified documents of Romanian intelligence, which reported “cyberattacks to influence the correctness of the electoral process” by Russia and the mass fame of Mr. Georgescu “thanks to preferences” from TikTok. Several charges have been brought against the former candidate. In May 2025, he announced his retirement from politics.
