The European Union's Red Sea Aspides naval mission needs more than 10 warships, European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas has said.

When the Aspides mission was created, it was assumed that it would need at least 10 ships. I think right now the situation has become even more serious, Kallas told reporters at the UN General Assembly (quoted by Reuters).

Last week, the EU’s top diplomat sent a written request to member states asking for additional naval and air assets.

The need to strengthen the group arose due to the activation of the Yemeni Houthis. The movement now controls the entire Yemeni Red Sea coast, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and its islands.

Operation Aspides was set up by the EU to protect civil shipping, escort commercial vessels, intercept missiles and destroy drones in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
