The government of Moldova proposed to the parliament to introduce a state of emergency in the energy sector for a period of 60 days due to the projected shortage of gas, electricity and fuel supplies. This follows from the draft resolution approved at a government meeting.

This winter, about 59% of Moldova’s electricity needs will have to be covered by imports. In terms of natural gas, more than 90% of the demand for the winter season is already reserved. However, the dynamics of prices in the markets “creates financial risks and requires significant resources for purchases and replenishment of mandatory stocks,” the government noted.

In addition, the republic faced a serious hydrological deficit on the rivers Dniester and Prut. Low water levels can affect water intake and, accordingly, the supply of drinking water to the population. “These two sectors are interrelated: the infrastructure for water collection, pumping and purification depends on electricity, and drought, in turn, reduces the production of hydroelectric power.”.

As explained by the head of the center for crisis management Sergey Diakon, the special regime will help to quickly adjust the conditions for the import and export of energy resources. He estimated the expected shortage of electricity during peak hours during the heating season at 100 MW, reports TASS.

In March, Moldova introduced a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days due to damage to the power line passing through Ukraine. At the end of July, a special regime in the energy sector was used in the republic for 30 days due to fuel shortages.
