The five largest Western oil companies earned almost $0.5 trillion after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the UN General Assembly.
“We know that the interests of companies will not retreat on their own. For decades, the oil giants have treated the atmosphere like an open sewer — and profited from the consequences, Guterres said. Mr. Guterres did not specify the names of the companies. Anti-corruption organization Global Witness estimated the profits of the largest corporations ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP and TotalEnergies at $0.467 trillion from February 2022 to January 2026.
Mr Guterres said ordinary people were paying more for energy, food and insurance. He compared that amount to $34 billion spent on developing countries adapting to global warming. According to him, the most profitable and polluting organizations should do much more to compensate for the damage they caused.
Why Russia holds Antonio Guterres with an unkind word from the post of UN Secretary General – in the material “Kommersant” “We do not need such a Secretary General”.
