The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters said it hacked into the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and stole data on current and former employees. Reuters reports.
The FBI confirmed that it was “aware of allegations of unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov” and launched an investigation.
The hackers said the attack was a response to a May warning from the bureau urging ransomware victims not to pay a ransom. The group said it had stolen “almost all agents and job seekers.”.
As evidence, the ransomware posted a sample with data of about 5 thousand people, containing names, home addresses, social security numbers and information about appointments.
Reuters journalists were able to partially confirm the authenticity of the published data, in particular, the personal information of FBI Director Cash Patel was included in the sample.
