The representation, legitimacy, credibility and effectiveness of the UN Security Council are in question. They concluded that the main reason is the outdated architecture of eighty years ago, which does not reflect modern geopolitical realities and is an obstacle to the proper solution of current and future problems facing humanity in the field of peace and security.
The Security Council is one of the five principal organs of the United Nations. Its permanent members are Russia, Great Britain, China, the United States and France. Another 10 non-permanent members are elected by the UN General Assembly for a two-year period. Five out of ten can be re-elected annually.
Japan and Germany have been a permanent member of the UN Security Council for several years. However, the members of the Security Council did not reach an agreement on this issue. Russia insisted on enlargement only on the basis of “achieving broad agreement”.
