Full consideration of the rights of the Russian language and Russian-speaking people in Ukraine is one of the conditions for a long-term settlement of the conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
According to the head of the foreign Ministry, in Ukraine “with the approval of the West” there are laws that prohibit the Russian language in education, media, culture and everyday life. “These laws began to be adopted long before a special military operation, since 2017,” Lavrov said.
Since 2019, a law has been in force in Ukraine that enshrines Ukrainian as the only state language in the country. According to the document, all state bodies and public organizations are obliged to use only the Ukrainian language. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has removed Russian from the list of languages subject to protection under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
