Bangladesh has decided to expand the planned orders of the national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Additionally, five Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners and six Boeing 737-8 MAX will be delivered, Reuters reports, citing the American manufacturer. US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen confirmed the deal, calling it another step toward mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
In April, Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed a contract with Boeing to supply 14 aircraft (10 Dreamliner and four 737 MAX 8) worth $3.7 billion in 2031-2035. Thus, the total order volume of the airline reached 25 boards. The amount of the additional agreement has not yet been disclosed.
The new deal is part of Dhaka's efforts to increase imports from the US and reduce the trade imbalance of about $6 billion. Bangladeshi authorities are seeking to reduce the risk of higher U.S. tariffs, which could hit the country’s export-oriented economy and, in particular, the textile industry.
At the same time, Boeing’s European competitor, Airbus, also claims contracts with Dhaka. A special technical committee under the government of Bangladesh is currently considering a proposal for the purchase of 10 European aircraft.
