“He intended to land as usual, and in the last seconds – when interception would have become impossible – to direct the plane to the terminal building,” Amit Segal, a political columnist for the TV channel, wrote on Telegram channel. That is why, he explained, the pilot tried to intercept control shortly before landing in Jordan.
According to Israel’s Channel Seven, Hamam al-Hammami also said he had specially arranged for flydubai to work on flights to Israel. The publication adds that he was going to carry out the plan during one of the flights in July, but did not become friends with one of the crew members.
Flydubai’s Boeing 737 flew from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. There were 174 passengers on board, 27 of them children. The plane sounded an alarm, dropped altitude and made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The reason was a fight between the captain and the co-pilot who attacked him with a knife. Passengers were able to disarm him. Israeli authorities described the incident on board as an attempted terrorist attack.
The attacker has Omani citizenship. He has been working at flydubai for less than a year. From a previous company where he worked for several years, he was fired because of his extremist views. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the man had been “subject to radical Islamist treatment.” Investigators, based on the latest data, believe that he acted alone.
