Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it was categorically unacceptable to deploy NATO military infrastructure in Afghanistan and neighboring countries. He said this at a meeting of the Moscow format of consultations on Afghanistan at the level of special representatives and senior officials.
The Foreign Minister stressed that any NATO presence in the region leads to destabilization and increased conflict. Historical experience over the past decades, he said, shows no other results from such interference.
NATO forces were stationed in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in the United States. In early 2021, Washington and other members of the alliance began to withdraw troops from the country, by August the operation was officially completed.
