El Niño will affect more than 347 million children in 100 countries. This is stated in the report of the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF.
According to the forecasts of the organization, the phenomenon of 2026-2027 will be one of the strongest in the history of observations. From October to December 2026, abnormally wet or arid conditions will increase the likelihood of severe floods, droughts and disease outbreaks.
“For children, El Niño is much more than just a natural and climatic phenomenon. It could lead to increased displacement, malnutrition, water shortages and disease outbreaks, said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.
The largest number of children at risk are in the Asia-Pacific region (190 million) and in Eastern and Southern Africa (41 million). UNICEF called on the international community to invest in the prevention of the consequences of the phenomenon.
