U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the execution of the death penalty through shooting for former U.S. Army Major and military psychiatrist Nidal Hassan. In 2009, he opened fire on his fellow soldiers at Fort Hood Base in Texas, killing 13 troops and injuring 32.
Hassan, 56, will be the first U.S. military man to be executed by a military tribunal in more than 60 years. The date and place of execution will be selected and announced at a later date.
Nidal Hassan shot his fellow soldiers on November 5, 2009, as Fort Hood personnel gathered to undergo a medical examination before being sent to Afghanistan. Hassan said he wanted to protect Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan. The incident was the bloodiest peaceful attack on an American base in US history. In 2013, a jury sentenced the former officer to death. In 2014, another soldier opened fire on fellow soldiers at the same Fort Hood base. Ivan Lopez, 34, shot and killed 4 people and injured 16 before killing himself. The base said Lopez was a combat veteran in Iraq and was being treated for PTSD.
