U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that U.S. B-1 strategic bombers were withdrawn from Fairford Air Force Base in the United Kingdom due to "some threats" against the facility, the BBC reported. The president did not go into details.
The Pentagon confirmed on October 4 that the bombers had returned to the United States. This happened after an attempted terrorist attack was prevented at the facility. Earlier it was reported that the decision to withdraw them was due to threats from Iran.
Trump said Washington knew of the threat in advance. According to Axios, the decision could be related to obtaining information about a possible drone attack from Iran. But the president evaded a question from reporters, saying, “If they did, they would suffer a lot.”.
A source close to the White House told the BBC the threat was taken very seriously anyway.
