Compulsory military service in Germany was suspended in 2011, but the provision on it is preserved in the Constitution. The right to conscientious objection to military service is also reserved.
On January 1, a law came into force in Germany, according to which young people born in 2008 or later must undergo a mandatory medical examination to identify those who can serve for health reasons. If the army does not receive the necessary number of volunteers, the parliament may decide to introduce a draft to recruit the required number of recruits.
After the law came into force, more and more young people in Germany began to write refusals in advance.
