French President Emmanuel Macron has called an emergency meeting with several ministers over student protests. This is reported by BFMTV with reference to sources in the environment of the head of state.
The meeting will be held on the evening of October 6. It will be attended by Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Minister of National Education Edouard Geffrey.
The first protests began on September 21 at the Lyceum of Saint-Exupery in Creteille, a suburb of Paris. They later spread across the country and turned into riots. Protesters launched fireworks towards police, arson and pogroms. High school students are unhappy with overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, poor school conditions and overburdened schedules.
According to the education minister, about 200 schoolchildren were injured during the demonstrations. French authorities said more than 5,000 people were detained during the protests. The government claims that far-left groups linked to Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s Unconquered France (LFI) are behind the radicalisation of the protests.
