Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun recalled that the US pledged
strictly adhere to the one-China principle, the provisions of the three joint communiques, and “exercise caution on the Taiwan issue,” Xinhua reported.
North Korea also condemned the US for supplying Taiwan with fighter jets. Pyongyang’s position was presented by international observer Kim Myung-chor in an article cited by the North Korean state agency KCNA. “The U.S. is presenting arms sales to Taiwan as a cause for ‘Strait Peace’, but this ... is like justifying the planting of a bomb at the gates of someone else’s home to ensure the safety of the same home.”.
Over the past 10 years, the U.S. has approved more than $39 billion in sales of weapons and military materials to Taiwan. The US government is discussing the supply of weapons for another $ 14 billion. As the North Korean observer adds, Washington’s support for the Taiwan administration is the reason why the region remains unstable.
